Why Scotland Should Be On Your 2019 Travel List

Scotland was voted the number one most beautiful country in the world by roughguides.com, as well as last year for the 6th year running, Scotland outperformed the rest of the UK in attracting visitors to its tourist attractions. If Scotland isn’t already on your travel list, here are 5 reasons why it should be:

1. Natural & Unspoilt Landscapes

Scotland is most known and praised for its vast amount of natural and unspoilt beauty. Scotland has everything from soaring mountains, peaceful lochs, ancient woodland and stretches upon stretches of golden unspoilt beaches. If you are one for the outdoors, then Scotland isn’t to be missed. Enjoy walking or cycling whilst taking in the beautiful scenery and prepare to be amazed!

 2. Hygge/Còsagach

Pronounced “hoo-ga”, Hygge is a Danish concept which cannot be defined by anything other than a feeling of “cosiness” or “comfort”. Scotland is so closely tied to this idea of “Hygee” that its own version of the word, “Còsagash” or better known “coorie” has been introduced by the Scots to replace it. Originally coming from the traditional word meaning “to snuggle” or “cuddle”, coorie has a brilliant way of summing up the essence of being Scottish. Come in from a long day of exploring the outdoors during the colder months and cuddle up under a blanket in front of the tv with a hot chocolate or a cup of tea… (This is where our cosy Barend wooden holiday lodges come in!) “Coorie” is something you will definitely experience during a relaxing holiday in Scotland.

3. History & Culture

One thing you can’t not associate with Scotland, is history & culture. Scotland has a unique and fascinating history & culture, which goes a lot deeper than bagpipes, haggis and kilts… A country which has experienced mass amounts of growth and change throughout its lifetime as well as being invaded and settled many times, which just contributes to Scotland’s rich and complex history. Whether it be the Romans, the Vikings or powerful ruling monarchs that you’re interested in, you’re sure to find something that covers every base.

4. To Get Away

Holidaying in Scotland is often associated with “de-stressing” and “getting away from everyday life.” Get lost in the abundance of unspoilt countryside and forget your responsibilities for just a couple of days! After a holiday in Scotland, you will return home feeling refreshed.

5. The People

If all of the above isn’t enough to tempt you to visit, then the people will. Scottish people are famous for their warm and friendly personalities… You will never be made to feel quite as “at home” anywhere else. You will meet people who are proud of and passionate about their country’s history and want you to experience too!
